An imposing antlered figure wearing a skull mask beckons towards a burning wicker effigy, surrounded by sinister cloaked figures in a misty, moonlit forest.

๐ŸŽƒ Survive the Night: The Samhain Workout

On Halloween night, the veil between the living and the dead grows thin. Beyond it lie the things our ancestors feared โ€” restless corpses, spectral huntsmen, death-bringers and creatures that stalk the darkness. Tonight, you get to meet them.

๐ŸŒพ A Most Unusual Harvest

Welcome to Samhain: Survive the Night, a collection of ten Halloween-inspired functional fitness workouts combining strength training, cardiovascular conditioning, muscular endurance and competitive challenges with the darker traditions of European folklore.

Each nightmare is a standalone Workout of the Day (WOD), featuring its own exercises, equipment requirements and Rules of Engagement. Some are straightforward physical tests involving heavy lifting, timed circuits and ascending repetition ladders. Others introduce team pursuits, tactical decisions, unpredictable penalties and challenges where the consequences of your choices may prove particularly unpleasant.

Four fitness images showing functional training movements: a man pushing a weighted sled, a runner sprinting forward, an athlete performing a box jump in a gym, and a woman pressing kettlebells overhead.

Samhain: Survive the Night combines strength training, cardiovascular conditioning, muscular endurance and competitive challenges across ten standalone Halloween-inspired workouts. From heavy pushes and explosive movements to sprinting, kettlebell work and timed circuits, the collection offers a varied functional fitness test beneath its darker folklore themes.

Designed for individuals, training partners and groups, the collection offers a variety of workout formats and difficulty levels, with exercises and workloads that can be adjusted to suit your experience.

And although the setting is unmistakably Halloween, the workouts themselves can be revisited throughout the year.

Ten workouts. Ten supernatural adversaries. Ten very different ways to test your fitness.

As for the creatures awaiting you, a little background may be useful.

๐Ÿ”ฅ The Old Terrors Never Died

Long before Halloween became a celebration of costumes, pumpkins and horror films, generations across the British Isles and continental Europe passed down tales of wandering spirits, restless corpses, ancient curses and things lurking beyond the safety of the firelight.

The ancient Gaelic festival of Samhain marked the transition into the darker half of the year. In Irish folklore, this was a time when the boundary between the human world and the mysterious Otherworld was believed to grow uncertain, allowing encounters with beings ordinarily unseen.

But these nightmares extend far beyond Celtic tradition. From the spectral riders of the Wild Hunt and the death-foretelling Banshee to Eastern European vampires and the walking dead of Norse legend, the continent has no shortage of horrors best left undisturbed.

And some, it seems, have unfinished business with the living.

Two contrasting images: a firelit gathering around a large ceremonial bonfire beside standing stones at night, and a modern Halloween street parade featuring giant skeleton figures in a brightly lit city.

Samhain began as an ancient Gaelic festival marking the end of the harvest and the beginning of winter, when the boundary between the living and the dead was believed to grow thin. Over centuries, its customs evolved and merged with later Christian observances to help shape Halloween, now celebrated around the world through costumes, processions, community events and playful encounters with the supernatural.

๐Ÿ“œ Certain Formalities Must Be Observed

Before proceeding, a few matters deserve your attention.

Each workout has its own format, rules and demands. Some are solitary ordeals, while others require partners or groups. You’ll encounter familiar training formats alongside a few rather unconventional arrangements.

Before beginning, familiarise yourself with the workout’s Rules of Engagement, check equipment requirements and adjust exercises, loads and intensity to suit your abilities.

A proper warm-up and sound judgement are strongly advised. These challenges are intended to test your fitness, not your willingness to disregard common sense.

After all, there is little honour in joining the dead prematurely.

๐Ÿ•ฏ๏ธ An Invitation Beyond the Veil

Choose Your Nightmare

The hour is yours to choose. The company, I regret to say, is rather less agreeable.

Below await ten standalone functional fitness challenges, organised into four distinct divisions: The Pursuits, The Curses, The Undying and The Reckonings.

Together, these divisions cover pursuit-based conditioning, progressive strength challenges, tactical competition and workouts governed by some rather unpleasant rules.

You’ll find a brief description beneath each workout title, identifying its format, principal training demands and whether it is suited to solo, partner or group participation.

Select your adversary, follow the link to its individual workout page and familiarise yourself with the Rules of Engagement before beginning.

The introductions are over. Your hosts are expecting you.

Shall we begin?

๐ŸŽ I. The Pursuits

No Place to Hide

Speed and stamina are your greatest allies in these two pursuit-based workouts.

The Wild Hunt transforms a functional fitness circuit into a team chase, where the hunted must escape a growing pack of spectral pursuers. The Black Dog takes a more solitary approach, challenging you to complete four timed HIIT circuits before the hound catches you.

Both demand sustained effort under pressure, and neither offers much sympathy to those who fall behind.

Group (3+) | Pursuit โ€ข Endurance โ€ข Tactical

A team pursuit workout where the hunted complete functional fitness circuits while avoiding the Huntsman and his growing pack. Get caught, and you join the Hunt.

Solo | HIIT โ€ข Running โ€ข Timed Circuits

Four high-intensity circuits combining running, strength and conditioning, each with its own time limit. Beat the clock to escape the Black Dog. Fall behind, and a short but brutal punishment awaits.

๐Ÿ•ฏ๏ธ II. The Curses

Marked for Misfortune

These workouts combine strength, conditioning and muscular endurance with additional challenges designed to disrupt your rhythm and test your resolve.

The Cry of the Banshee introduces unpredictable exercise penalties into a timed workout, while the Warlock’s Tower demands an increasingly difficult ascent through four floors, each accompanied by a persistent curse.

Expect interruptions, accumulating fatigue and obligations that cannot simply be ignored.

Solo / Group | Conditioning โ€ข Timed Circuits โ€ข Interruptions

Four functional conditioning circuits interrupted by the Banshee’s unpredictable screams. Every wail triggers an additional penalty, disrupting your rhythm and adding to your finishing time.

Solo / Group | Strength & Conditioning โ€ข Progressive Challenge

Climb four increasingly demanding floors, each containing a different functional fitness circuit. Choose between three escalating curses, then face one final ordeal at the summit to escape the Warlock’s Tower.

โšฐ๏ธ III. The Undying

Death Is No Escape

The dead are proving remarkably reluctant to remain in their graves. Unfortunately, they’ve brought some demanding workouts with them.

This division brings together competitive conditioning, ascending repetition ladders and heavy strength training. The Vampyre tests deception and teamwork, the Revenant increases the workload with every resurrection, and the Draugr delivers sixteen stations of strongman-inspired physical punishment.

Three very different encounters, each demanding considerable strength and endurance from the living.

Group | Deception โ€ข Conditioning โ€ข Competitive

A group conditioning challenge built around secret identities, changing workloads and a final confrontation. Unmask the Vampyre before the showdown, or risk becoming an unwilling servant of Dracula.

Solo / Group | Ascending Ladder โ€ข Strength & Conditioning

A four-round functional fitness ladder where repetitions increase with every circuit. Between rounds, an escalating abdominal challenge tests your endurance. The Revenant keeps rising, and so must you.

Solo / Group | Heavy Strength โ€ข Strongman โ€ข Muscular Endurance

Sixteen demanding stations built around heavy lifts, sandbags, prowlers and muscular endurance. No complicated penalties or racing against the clock. Just a relentless test of strength worthy of the restless dead.

๐Ÿ˜ˆ IV. The Reckonings

A Price Must Be Paid

Here, strength and conditioning meet strategy, competition and consequences. Completing the exercises is only part of the challenge; the decisions you make can determine what comes next.

The Wicker Man introduces a group vote and a demanding sacrifice finale. The Wraith pits two competitors against one another in a tactical exercise-selection contest. And the Devil’s Due offers reduced workloads in exchange for an increasingly punishing final reckoning.

Choose carefully. Some decisions cannot be undone.

Solo / Group | Functional Fitness โ€ข Strength โ€ข Group Decision

Three functional fitness circuits lead to a final test of strength and endurance. In the group version, participants elect one unfortunate soul to face the Burning Man, while the remaining villagers complete a lighter ordeal.

Partner Competition | Tactical โ€ข Strength & Conditioning

Two competitors battle through four head-to-head circuits, each selecting exercises designed to exploit their opponent’s weaknesses. Every choice is a tactical decision, and a dead heat demands one final showdown.

Solo / Group | Strength & Conditioning โ€ข Risk & Reward

Three gruelling functional fitness circuits offer six opportunities to bargain for an easier workload. Every deal increases the difficulty of your mysterious final challenge. The Devil offers immediate relief, but the bill always comes due.

๐Ÿ•ฐ๏ธ The Witching Hour

For those seeking a more atmospheric encounter, there is an optional midnight challenge.

Begin your chosen workout between 11:00 and 11:30 PM on 31 October, aiming, where its duration allows, to finish as the clock approaches midnight.

Long associated in folklore with witchcraft, restless spirits and supernatural disturbances, the witching hour provides a fitting backdrop for an encounter with the unknown.

There are, of course, more sensible hours in which to exercise.

๐Ÿ•ฏ๏ธ Before the Fires Go Out

Ten encounters. Ten very different challenges. Each designed to test your strength, endurance, cunning and determination.

Whether you confront a single nightmare or attempt the entire collection, there is always a reason to return. Improve your performance, face a different ordeal or discover whether an old adversary has become any less formidable.

For now, the fires are burning low, the paths are waiting, and the inhabitants of the Otherworld have grown impatient.

We wish you every success.

We cannot, however, guarantee your safe return.

You survived the night. How disappointing for your hosts.

Solo or group challenge (minimum three participants). Four circuits of four stations.

Everyone completes the first three circuits before the group selects a Sacrifice for the final ordeal.

Each participant secretly votes for another member of the group to become The Sacrifice. Self-voting is prohibited. Whoever receives the most votes faces the flames. If there’s a tie for first place, all tied participants become Sacrifices.

The Sacrifice faces the gruelling Burning Man finale (RPE 8โ€“9), while everyone else becomes The Cult, completing a lighter bodyweight circuit (RPE 5โ€“6). Both finales begin simultaneously.

Solo participants automatically face Burning Man, without a ballot or alternative finale.

Complete your assigned final circuit to finish the ritual.
