Sinister devil with small horns and glowing ember-red eyes stands in a dark doorway, watching from the shadows with an unsettling expression.

😈 The Devil’s Due β€” The Faustian Bargain

The Devil has a tempting offer: less work now, in exchange for a little suffering later. In this Faustian-inspired Halloween workout, every exercise presents a bargain, every decision carries a price and your accumulated debts determine the severity of your final punishment. How much is your soul worth?

πŸŽƒ Introduction

The Devil’s Due is a four-circuit strength and conditioning challenge built around physical endurance, temptation and the consequences of taking the easier path. The first three circuits offer six opportunities to bargain for reduced workloads. Every accepted deal increases the severity of a mysterious final circuit, while participants who resist every temptation earn a considerably more merciful conclusion.

The old tales are filled with fools who believed they could outwit the Devil, accepting generous bargains without troubling themselves over the eventual cost. His terms are remarkably accommodating. His methods of collection are rather less so.

πŸ“œ The Legend of the Devil's Bargain

Throughout the British Isles and continental Europe, generations told stories of mortals making dangerous bargains with the Devil. Wealth, power and forbidden knowledge could all be obtained for a price. Unfortunately, the true cost was seldom appreciated until the debt came due.

In Irish folklore, Stingy Jack twice outwitted Old Nick, first trapping him as a coin beside a silver cross, then leaving him stranded in a tree marked with a cross. In return, the Devil promised never to claim his soul. But when Jack eventually died, Heaven refused him entry, while Hell was bound to turn him away. Condemned to wander the darkness with a burning ember inside a hollowed turnip, he became Jack of the Lantern, a figure associated with the Halloween jack-o’-lantern.

The Devil’s Bargain appears throughout European folklore, promising wealth, power or forbidden knowledge in exchange for a terrible price. Its most famous cautionary tale is Doctor Faustus, whose pact with the Devil grants him twenty-four years of extraordinary power before his soul is claimed.

In Wales, the legend of Devil’s Bridge (Pontarfynach) tells of a similar bargain. The Devil offered to build a bridge across a dangerous gorge in exchange for the first living creature to cross it. Unfortunately for Old Nick, a cunning old woman tossed a loaf of bread across the completed bridge, sending her dog after it. The Devil, it seems, had neglected to read the small print.

But the German legend of Doctor Faust offers a considerably darker conclusion. Immortalised in Christopher Marlowe’s Doctor Faustus, the scholar bargains away his soul for twenty-four years of extraordinary knowledge and power. When his allotted time expires, his desperate pleas cannot undo the agreement. The Devil has come to collect.

The Devil, after all, has had considerable experience negotiating with fools.

🍎 The Temptation

Tonight, the Devil has prepared a rather personal test of your resolve.

Three gruelling circuits stand between you and your final judgement. Each exercise presents an opportunity to bargain, allowing you to reduce your immediate workload in exchange for an unspecified punishment awaiting you at the end.

You may refuse every offer and endure the full ordeal. Or you may accept the Devil’s assistance whenever exhaustion begins to cloud your judgement.

Every bargain brings relief. Every bargain also brings you closer to damnation.

And when the final reckoning arrives, the Devil will reveal precisely what your decisions have cost you.

Choose carefully. He has a remarkable memory for outstanding debts.

Solo or group challenge. Three gruelling four-station circuits followed by a final reckoning.

Every exercise in Circuits I–III offers a Devil’s Bargain: accept a reduced workload or refuse and complete the full challenge. Each participant may accept or reject each individual bargain before attempting the relevant exercise. Every accepted offer counts as one debt, accumulating towards the final judgement. Decide before starting each exercise.

Every accepted bargain adds one debt to your personal tally. The more bargains you accept, the worse your final punishment. Once you’ve accepted six bargains, Final Damnation is guaranteed. You may continue accepting deals, but your punishment cannot increase further.

Your accumulated debt determines the difficulty of three mystery exercises, randomly selected from the Devil’s Pool.Β Use the random selection boxes to reveal your three exercises, then complete their prescribed workloads.
