Sinister Victorian gentleman wearing a top hat, spectacles and dark overcoat reveals glowing red eyes on a misty, gaslit London street.

πŸ¦‡ The Vampyre’s Masquerade β€” Blood is the Life

The orchestra is playing, the candles are burning low, and beneath the masks, something sinister moves among the guests. Not everyone attending tonight’s masquerade is among the living. Before the final notes fade, the Vampyre will reveal itself. Until then, trust no one.

πŸŽƒ Introduction

The Vampyre is a group conditioning challenge combining functional fitness, deception and tactical decision-making. One participant secretly assumes the role of the Vampyre, completing progressively reduced workloads while the remaining hunters face increasing demands. After three circuits, the group must identify the creature. A correct accusation leads to a final showdown; an incorrect one places the hunters at Dracula’s mercy.

For centuries, tales of the undead have warned of creatures that sustain themselves upon the living. Tonight, one walks among you. The difficulty, of course, is discovering who.

🩸 The Legend of the Vampyre

For centuries, villages across Eastern Europe whispered of the undead, restless corpses that rose from their graves to torment the living, drain blood and spread death. From the dreaded strigoi of Romanian folklore to the vampires of the Balkans, these creatures inspired elaborate burial customs and desperate attempts to prevent the dead from returning.

Unlike the elegant aristocrats of later Gothic fiction, traditional vampires were often described as bloated, bloodied and grotesque. When mysterious deaths struck isolated communities, suspicious villagers sometimes exhumed their neighbours, subjecting supposed vampires to staking, decapitation or burning.

Three historical woodcut-style illustrations depicting a burning village, a sinister figure with a staff, and a gathering of witches and demonic creatures.

The Warlock was feared in Scottish folklore as a practitioner of forbidden magic, associated with curses, sorcery and dealings with the Devil. Such beliefs fuelled the notorious Scottish witch trials, while figures like John Fian and Major Thomas Weir became entwined with enduring tales of witchcraft and supernatural powers.

One notorious incident occurred in 1725, in the Serbian village of Kisiljevo. Following a series of unexplained deaths, villagers accused the deceased Petar Blagojević of returning from his grave to prey upon the living. When his corpse was exhumed, witnesses reportedly found it unusually well preserved, with fresh-looking blood around its mouth. Convinced they had uncovered a vampire, they drove a wooden stake through his body.

These ancient fears later helped inspire Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1897), which transformed the monstrous revenant into a cunning aristocratic predator. Arriving from Transylvania upon the storm-lashed shores of Whitby, Yorkshire, the Count brought an old European terror disturbingly close to home. Beneath his sophistication remained the same dreadful hunger, concealed behind the appearance of an ordinary gentleman.

And the most frightening possibility of all? The monster may already be standing among you.

🎭 The Masquerade Begins

Tonight, Dracula walks among the Hunters.

For three circuits, the company must endure an increasingly demanding ordeal. Yet one participant carries a terrible secret. While the Hunters grow exhausted, Dracula feeds upon their suffering, quietly reducing his own workload as theirs increases.

Watch your companions carefully. Who appears suspiciously comfortable? Who seems to recover too quickly? And who might be concealing the true extent of their strength?

When the third circuit ends, the Hunters must identify the creature hiding in their midst.

Accuse correctly, and you may yet destroy the Count. Choose poorly, and the Hunters shall become the hunted.

The masquerade is about to begin.

πŸ“œ Rules of Engagement

Click on links below for breakdown of the workout.

Group deception challenge. Four circuits of four stations, with one secretly assigned Vampyre.

Before the workout, each participant secretly draws a role. One becomes Dracula, the others become Hunters. Dracula must conceal his identity while discreetly completing fewer repetitions as the Hunters’ workload increases.

CircuitHuntersDracula
I β€” First Feeding12 reps11 reps
II β€” Growing Hunger13 reps10 reps
III β€” Blood Is the Life14 reps9 reps

After Circuit III, everyone reveals whom they suspect of being Dracula. The group has 60 seconds to agree on a single suspect, with a majority decision settling any disagreement. A correct accusation triggers the Vampire Showdown. Accuse the wrong person, or fail to reach a majority before time expires, and Dracula wins β€” unleashing The Master’s Command.

Dracula is exposed! Everyone races through the same four-station finale. If any Hunter finishes before Dracula, the Hunters win. If Dracula beats them all, he wins.

Dracula may halve his prescribed repetitions at one chosen station, rounding up where necessary.

Dracula wins! The Hunters become his Familiars and must obey his final command.

Dracula selects four exercises and prescribes the workloads for his Familiars, then designs a separate four-station circuit for himself. All Familiars complete the same punishment, with resistance individually scaled where necessary. There is no second chance to defeat him.

Dracula’s authority is limited to four stations per circuit, with no additional rounds or punishments. All prescriptions must respect the following maximums:

Exercise typeMaximum
Heavy lifts / explosive movements15 reps
Moderate resistance exercises20 reps
Bodyweight / core exercises30 reps
Loaded carries80m
Overhead carries40m
Running / Rowing / SkiErg400m / 500m / 400m
Assault Bike20 calories
Static holds60 seconds

These are ceilings, not targets. Loads must remain appropriate to each participant (generally RPE 7–8 or below), with no forced repetitions to failure or unsafe demands. Once Dracula announces his command, he cannot increase it. Participants may always scale for safety.
