Spectral horsemen and a terrifying huntsman charge across a dark moorland hill, accompanied by a pack of ghostly hounds beneath storm clouds.

๐ŸŽ The Wild Hunt โ€” Run for Your Soul

The horns sound in the distance. Somewhere beyond the treeline, hounds are baying, and the thunder of approaching hooves grows louder. The Wild Hunt has begun, and tonight, you are its quarry.

๐ŸŽƒ Introduction

The Wild Hunt is a team-based functional fitness challenge combining running, strength-endurance stations and a relentless pursuit mechanic. One participant begins as the Huntsman, chasing the remaining competitors through four circuits. Anyone caught joins the growing pack, turning the workout into an increasingly desperate struggle to escape.

According to the old legends, the riders of the Wild Hunt seldom returned empty-handed. Tonight, they’re coming for you.

๐Ÿ“ฏ The Legend of the Wild Hunt

Across Northern Europe, generations told of a terrifying supernatural procession sweeping through the night. Spectral horsemen, ghostly hounds and restless spirits travelled across the countryside, their arrival often accompanied by howling winds, hunting horns and the unmistakable sound of approaching hooves.

The identity of the Huntsman varied between traditions. In Germanic folklore, the procession became associated with Woden or Odin, while other accounts described cursed hunters, demonic riders or wandering companies of the dead. In England, Herne the Hunter, the antlered phantom said to haunt Windsor Forest, was later associated with the Wild Hunt, his legend immortalised by William Shakespeare. In darker Christian-era traditions, the Devil himself sometimes assumed the role of Huntsman, pursuing sinners and their souls through the night. Whatever their origins, these nocturnal visitors were seldom considered welcome company.

The Wild Hunt was a terrifying supernatural procession of ghostly riders, spectral hounds and restless spirits said to roam the skies of Northern Europe. Associated with Woden (Odin), cursed huntsmen and sometimes the Devil, its appearance was feared as an omen of death or misfortune, while those caught in its path risked joining the eternal Hunt.

One particularly unsettling account appears in the Peterborough Chronicle of 1127, which describes mysterious black huntsmen riding black horses, accompanied by fearsome hounds. Witnesses reportedly saw and heard the apparitions roaming the countryside near Peterborough.

These stories were not simply entertainment. The appearance of a supernatural procession could be interpreted as an omen of death, misfortune or impending catastrophe. And in some versions of the legend, those unfortunate enough to become entangled with the Hunt might find themselves joining its ranks.

The identities of the hunters changed from region to region, but the warning remained remarkably consistent.

When the Hunt approaches, it is best not to be found in its path.

๐Ÿบ The Hunt Is Upon You

Tonight, the Huntsman has chosen his quarry. You have a brief head start, four circuits to survive and a growing pack of spectral hounds at your heels.

Every runner overtaken is claimed by the Hunt, dragged beyond the Veil and transformed into another of its relentless pursuers. As the pack grows, the Huntsman gains fresh hounds to unleash upon those still desperately seeking escape.

Your only hope is to stay ahead of the Hunt until the final circuit is complete. Fall behind, and you may find yourself chasing the very people you were running alongside.

Run while you still can. The dead are remarkably persistent.

๐Ÿ“œ Rules of Engagement

Team pursuit. Minimum three participants. Four circuits of four stations, incorporating running.

One participant becomes the Huntsman; everyone else is Prey. Runners receive a staggered head start based on fitness:

  • 00:00 โ€” Beginners depart (120-second advantage).
  • 00:30 โ€” Intermediates depart (90-second advantage).
  • 01:00 โ€” Advanced runners depart (60-second advantage).
  • 02:00 โ€” The Huntsman is unleashed.

When the active pursuer overtakes a member of the Prey during the main circuit, that runner is captured and becomes a Spectral Hound, joining the growing Hunt.

The Huntsman commands the Hunt. At the start of each station, they may continue the pursuit personally or appoint a Spectral Hound to take over. The Huntsman can withdraw into Limbo to conserve energy, returning to lead the chase whenever they choose.

Only one member of the Hunt actively pursues the Prey at a time. All others remain in Limbo.

Every member of the Hunt not actively pursuing, including the Huntsman, must continuously repeat:

  • 15 Air Squats
  • 10 Push-Ups
  • 20 Alternating Reverse Lunges (10 per leg)
  • 15 Sit-Ups

Maintain a moderate pace (RPE 5โ€“7), cycling through the exercises without prescribed rest until selected to pursue or the challenge ends.

Survive all four circuits without capture and escape the Wild Hunt. If every runner is captured, the Hunt wins.

The active pursuer and Prey complete identical station workloads. The Hunt’s advantage comes from its growing pack and rotating pursuers. Nobody in the Hunt gets to rest.
